The Ministry of Health has denied rumors that the Zika virus is spreading through mosquitoes.
The ministry made this statement after some major online media outlets in the Maldives reported that the Zika virus was spreading in the country.
Regarding this, the Health Ministry said that the information about Zika virus spreading in the Maldives is not correct. The ministry also stated that the Zika virus is not spreading in the Maldives.
“The information about Zika virus spreading is not correct,” he said.
The news about Zika virus spreading originated from a video released today by the Maldives Red Crescent to raise awareness about mosquito-borne diseases becoming more common.
In the video, pediatrician Dr. Ahmed Faisal said that mosquito-borne diseases are increasing in the Maldives. He noted the spread of dengue fever, chikungunya, and Zika virus.
The World Health Organization declared in November 2016 that the Zika virus, which is spread by the Aedes mosquito that also transmits dengue and chikungunya, is no longer a global health emergency.
About 80 percent of people infected with Zika virus show no symptoms. Some people may experience symptoms including fever with a red rash, red eyes, body aches, headaches, and joint pain.
This virus mainly affects the unborn child during pregnancy. Various types of Zika often cause noticeable birth defects in newborns.
