A video originally recorded in 2021 showing the detention of a Hezbollah fighter in southern Lebanon has resurfaced online, misrepresented as a recent event occurring amid ongoing conflicts between Hezbollah and Israeli forces in 2024.
The 45-second clip depicts a group of individuals apprehending a man and forcing him into a black pickup truck while shouting in Arabic phrases such as “This is an animal!” and “Hezbollah, Hezbollah!”
On September 23, 2024, a post on X (formerly Twitter), which also circulated on Facebook, claimed: “Breaking: Lebanese Druze have set up checkpoints in their town to ensure no Hezbollah terrorists try to hide among them.” However, investigations reveal that the incident actually took place in 2021, contradicting the timeline presented in the post.
Additional footage, published by Lebanese media on August 6, 2021, shows various moments from the same scene, featuring people surrounding a damaged blue flatbed truck loaded with rocket launchers in Chouaya, a predominantly Druze area of southeastern Lebanon.
Reuters reports that this misrepresentation highlights the significance of fact-checking information before sharing, particularly in a climate where misinformation can rapidly escalate tensions. The original incident, rooted in the context of heightened tensions regarding Hezbollah activities, does not reflect the current situation involving ongoing hostilities in 2024.
