The Government of India has donated 72 vehicles to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), further strengthening defence ties between the two nations.

In a ceremony held this afternoon at the President’s Office as part of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the Maldives, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu accepted a symbolic key to the vehicles on behalf of MNDF. The key was presented by Prime Minister Modi, symbolizing India’s continued commitment to supporting Maldives’ defence capacity.

The donation follows an agreement signed earlier this year between Maldives’ Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon and India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh during Minister Ghassan’s official visit to India.

The 72 vehicles gifted include:

  • 8 27-seater buses

  • 10 pickup trucks

  • 10 mini-vans

  • 10 vans

  • 5 lorries

  • 8 tractors

  • 4 tipper dump trucks

  • 4 backhoe loaders

  • 2 cranes

  • 6 mini excavators

  • 5 excavators

India stated that the donation is a reflection of the growing strategic cooperation between the two countries and will significantly support capacity building within the MNDF.

This gesture highlights India’s ongoing support in strengthening Maldives’ defence infrastructure, aligning with broader bilateral efforts to enhance collaboration in security, disaster response, and regional stability.
