Seaplane Services from Velidhoo to Begin in January :President Muizzu

Velidhoo, Noonu Atoll – President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that seaplane services from Noonu Velidhoo will commence in January 2026, bringing improved connectivity to the most populous island in the atoll.

During a visit to Velidhoo on Wednesday night, the President revealed plans to fast-track the development of an airport at the nearby Vihafaru sandbank to enable the new service. A dedicated seaplane platform will be built in Velidhoo ahead of the launch.

A sea ambulance service based in Velidhoo is also expected to begin operation in the same month.

The national airline, Maldivian, currently operates seaplane routes to several islands in Baa atoll – Fulhadhoo, Fehendhoo, and Goidhoo.

With a population of over 2,000, Velidhoo plays a vital role in the region. President Muizzu confirmed that several major development projects are in the pipeline, including:

  • A new hospital

  • A community-based rehabilitation centre

  • Reclamation work to support boat-related services

  • A new police station

The President also received a petition signed by 600 residents, highlighting longstanding concerns over the island’s harbour.

President Muizzu is currently touring multiple islands in Noonu atoll to engage directly with communities and oversee government-led development initiatives.
