Kulhudhuffushi, 12 October 2024 – The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Councillors’ Conference “Decentralized Connection” commenced this morning in Kulhudhuffushi City.
This conference is the first in a series of conferences planned to be held in different parts of the country, with this one being held in the Upper North.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and MDP President Abdulla Shahid, along with other senior party officials, are participating in the conference. Additionally, MDP councillors from Ha, Hd, and Sh atolls, WDC members, and mayors from the country’s five cities are also attending the conference.
The main objective of this conference is to share concerns about the alleged undermining of council powers following amendments to the Decentralization Act, and to discuss these issues with MDP councillors from the Upper North. According to the MDP, they will declare the matters agreed upon in this conference and call on the government to address these issues.
This trip by the MDP leadership will continue until next Tuesday. It is hoped that this conference will facilitate important discussions on the decentralization system and pave the way for protecting the powers of the councils.
