A confidential Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) report allegedly detailing suspicious financial transactions linked to MP Ibrahim Shujau has been leaked online, sparking political controversy and prompting an official investigation.<\/p>\n
The document, widely circulated on social media over the past week, outlines transactions worth MVR 42.5 million involving companies connected to the lawmaker, including Official Events, DG Holdings, and Quick Sure. The funds were reportedly received from various state institutions between November 1, 2023, and January 10, 2024\u2014a period coinciding with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu\u2019s early administration.<\/p>\n
According to the report, Official Events, a company where Shujau holds shares, received MVR 13 million from the State Infrastructure Welfare and Empowerment Company (SIWEC) for organizing the 2023 presidential inauguration. Part of this sum\u2014allegedly MVR 8 million\u2014was used to purchase two luxury apartments in Hulhumal\u00e9 for company shareholders.<\/p>\n
The report suggests possible money laundering, illicit enrichment, and misuse of political influence, citing irregular payment patterns and attempts to obscure the origin and flow of funds.<\/p>\n
Shujau, the MP for Baarah constituency, has denied any wrongdoing. Speaking to media, he questioned the authenticity of the leaked document but did not dispute that the payments had occurred. \u201cMy companies have done business under previous administrations as well. These are legal contracts and there is nothing unlawful about them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Maldives Police Service confirmed that an investigation into the matter was already underway since April this year. However, the leak has intensified scrutiny, with opposition figures and transparency advocates calling for swift action.<\/p>\n
In a related move, FIU Director Abdulla Ashraf was removed from his position last week and replaced by Ismail Sajid. The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) said the change was aimed at \u201cimproving institutional efficiency,\u201d though the timing has raised eyebrows.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Shujau has been removed from the influential Public Accounts Committee in Parliament and reassigned to the National Development and Heritage Committee, following rising political pressure.<\/p>\n
