Tata, known for his leadership in transforming the group into one of India’s largest multinational conglomerates, leaves behind a remarkable legacy that spanned over two decades at the helm of Tata Sons.

Born in 1937 to a Parsi family, Ratan Tata went on to study Architecture and Structural Engineering at Cornell University in the United States. He began his career at Tata Industries in 1962 as an assistant and underwent six months of training at the group’s Jamshedpur plant. Tata later worked across various divisions of the group, including Tata Steel, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and National Radio and Electronics (NELCO).

His ascent to the top came in 1991 when JRD Tata, who had led the group for over a century, appointed Ratan Tata as his successor. Under his leadership, the Tata Group saw significant international expansion, acquiring major companies such as Corus, the Anglo-Dutch steel giant; Jaguar and Land Rover, two British automotive icons; and Tetley, the world’s second-largest tea company. The UK’s Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds called Tata “a giant of the business world” and acknowledged his pivotal role in shaping British industry through Tata’s strategic acquisitions, which built strong economic ties between India and the UK.

Currently, Tata’s body is lying in state at a cultural center in Mumbai, where the public is being allowed to pay their respects. A state funeral will be held after Thursday, recognizing his significant contributions to the country.

In 2008, the Indian government awarded Tata the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian honor, in recognition of his impact on Indian industry and philanthropy.

As India and the world mourn the loss of one of its most revered business figures, Ratan Tata’s legacy as a visionary leader, philanthropist, and champion of ethical business practices will continue to inspire generations.

India’s iconic business leader, Ratan Tata, has passed away at the age of 86, according to a statement from the Tata Group.
