India’s iconic business leader, Ratan Tata<\/strong>, has passed away at the age of 86, according to a statement from the Tata Group. Tata, known for his leadership in transforming the group into one of India\u2019s largest multinational conglomerates, leaves behind a remarkable legacy that spanned over two decades at the helm of Tata Sons.<\/p>\n

Born in 1937 to a Parsi<\/strong> family, Ratan Tata went on to study Architecture and Structural Engineering<\/strong> at Cornell University<\/strong> in the United States. He began his career at Tata Industries<\/strong> in 1962 as an assistant and underwent six months of training at the group\u2019s Jamshedpur plant. Tata later worked across various divisions of the group, including Tata Steel<\/strong>, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)<\/strong>, and National Radio and Electronics (NELCO)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

His ascent to the top came in 1991 when JRD Tata<\/strong>, who had led the group for over a century, appointed Ratan Tata as his successor. Under his leadership, the Tata Group saw significant international expansion, acquiring major companies such as Corus<\/strong>, the Anglo-Dutch steel giant; Jaguar<\/strong> and Land Rover<\/strong>, two British automotive icons; and Tetley<\/strong>, the world\u2019s second-largest tea company. These acquisitions solidified Tata’s reputation as a global business leader, with the group\u2019s annual revenues now exceeding $100 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/strong> was among the first to express his condolences, describing Tata as “a thoughtful business leader, a kind soul, and a special human being.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi shared his sorrow and recounted his many meetings with Tata over the years.<\/p>\n

International tributes have also poured in. The UK’s Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds<\/strong> called Tata “a giant of the business world” and acknowledged his pivotal role in shaping British industry through Tata’s strategic acquisitions, which built strong economic ties between India and the UK.<\/p>\n

Currently, Tata\u2019s body is lying in state at a cultural center in Mumbai<\/strong>, where the public is being allowed to pay their respects. A state funeral<\/strong> will be held after Thursday, recognizing his significant contributions to the country.<\/p>\n

In 2008, the Indian government awarded Tata the Padma Vibhushan<\/strong>, the country\u2019s second-highest civilian honor, in recognition of his impact on Indian industry and philanthropy.<\/p>\n
