The Maldives has officially etched its name in the Guinness World Records following a breathtaking fireworks spectacle organized by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) to mark the inauguration of the new international terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA).
The record was awarded for the “Most Synchronized and Simultaneous Fireworks Displays Across Multiple Locations”, achieved through a dazzling showcase launched from 19 separate sites—including 16 sea-based barges around Malé and 3 land-based sites within the airport premises.
Guinness World Records adjudicators were present in Malé to witness and certify the event in real-time. Following the successful execution and verification, MACL was presented with the official Guinness World Record certificate—making this a historic first for the company and for Maldives’ aviation history.

The event was held on Maldives’ 60th Independence Day, coinciding with the grand unveiling of the brand-new 78,000 square-meter terminal at VIA. The terminal is expected to handle up to 7.5 million passengers annually, significantly boosting the Maldives’ tourism and air travel capacity.
The record-breaking fireworks display was complemented by a synchronized drone show, traditional cultural performances, and a projection-mapped light show across the new terminal’s facade—creating an unforgettable multi-sensory experience for attendees, including high-level dignitaries, aviation leaders, and international guests.
This world record has added global prestige to the Maldives’ national airport and reflects the country’s ambition to compete on the international stage in both aviation infrastructure and event execution.
