Maamigili, Alif Dhaal Atoll — The island of Maamigili is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 15-year-old Looth Ahmed, whose lifeless body was recovered late last night after he went missing while diving with friends. The tragedy has cast a shadow over the close-knit community, leaving residents devastated and in shock.
Looth, a Grade 10 student known for his infectious smile and cheerful personality, was described by many as a child of the sea — confident, energetic, and deeply loved by all who knew him. His sudden death has left a void that the island community is struggling to comprehend.
On Monday evening, Looth set out on a routine fishing trip with three of his close friends — an activity the boys often enjoyed together. During the outing, Looth dove into the water but failed to resurface. His friends searched desperately before alerting others for help as dusk approached.
In response, residents of Maamigili joined hands with the Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) personnel in an urgent search effort. Despite their hopes, Looth’s body was found later that night in the waters off Maamigili.
As news of his passing spread, sorrow rippled through the island. Schools suspended classes, and homes were filled with quiet mourning. Many gathered to support Looth’s grieving family, remembering him not just as a bright student, but as a son, a friend, and a young soul taken too soon.
