Former President Mohamed Nasheed made a notable return to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) yesterday, June 23, 2025, during a rally held at Sultan Park in Malé. His comeback marks a significant moment in Maldives’ politics, reflecting efforts to unify the opposition ahead of the 2026 local council elections and the 2028 presidential race.
Nasheed’s political journey over recent years has been marked by both international leadership and internal party challenges. After leaving the Maldives due to political and legal difficulties, he served as Secretary-General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), championing climate action for vulnerable island nations. In 2023, disagreements within the MDP led Nasheed to establish The Democrats, a splinter party that divided the democratic opposition.
Yesterday’s rally celebrated the dissolution of The Democrats and its members’ decision to rejoin the MDP. Nasheed addressed a large gathering of supporters, emphasizing unity and shared purpose.
